Sharing our rewarding experiences

I’ve had the opportunity for almost two years now to have a member of the ARCG listen to me regularly for an hour and a half, twice a month.

It has really helped me talk about my emotions and what I was going through painfully. He listened to me and didn’t tell me what to do—only offering suggestions when needed.

I’m more than grateful for that. It has certainly helped me avoid falling into depression or burnout.

And he continues to help me.

I got in touch with the volunteer, and very quickly he became a friend. He is supportive and always in a good mood. When he went on a trip, I missed him, but he took the time to call me from there. He’s a great guy, and I’m happy to have him in my life as a friend.

Socially, we interact a lot. Since I like routine, we created one: on Thursday mornings, we chat, then he comes over to my place, we go have lunch at Chic Resto Pop, and sometimes we go for a walk afterward if he doesn’t have errands to run. I like that too because he accompanies me to a group for seniors, and I think that without him, I would never have gone.

Meeting with my companion really does me a lot of good for my morale.

I appreciate receiving help from a volunteer at ARCG. His support is very varied and helps me better cope with aging. Indeed, his regular visits are useful to me in many ways: talking with a trusted person about my moods and my questions as someone in my eighties, guiding me through computer-related issues, helping me order items online, assisting me with small tasks like changing a wall frame or getting rid of an old mattress, and above all, being able to rely on the regularity of our meetings twice a month—always dependable.

It’s reassuring to be able to count on someone honest and reliable who truly wants the best for you.
